Nacida de la pasión compartida de un grupo de músicos dedicados principalmente al heavy metal, The Night Flight Orchestra se propuso la misión de crear una banda de rock clásico. ¡Y vaya si lo lograron! Con Björn Strid (Soilwork) en la voz, Sharlee D'Angelo (Arch Enemy) en el bajo y Jonas Källsbäck en la batería como miembros fundadores, la banda ha cosechado un éxito tremendo con sus seis álbumes de estudio. Su séptimo trabajo, Give Us the Moon, es posiblemente el mejor hasta la fecha, consolidando aún más su lugar como la banda de rock clásico más destacada de este siglo.
El álbum arranca con una introducción ambientada en un aeropuerto, donde una voz anuncia la "última llamada" para que todos los miembros de la banda aborden, antes de lanzarse de lleno al primer tema, "Stratus". Inmediatamente, te encuentras con una intro clásica al más puro estilo ochentero, seguida por la potente voz de Björn y un coro súper pegadizo; una fórmula que se repite a lo largo del disco. "Shooting Velvet" mantiene esa onda de rock clásico, con una intro de teclado y batería que recuerda a ELO. Por su parte, "Like the Beating of a Heart" ofrece una intro más lenta, dominada por el teclado con sonidos de sintetizador bien ochenteros, que desemboca en otro coro pegadizo.
"Melbourne, May I?" es una de mis favoritas, mostrando el lado más rockero de la banda con un riff clásico que evoca totalmente el espíritu del Toto de los 80. "Miraculous" sigue en la línea de canciones pegadizas de rock clásico, mientras que "Paloma" es un tema más lento y emotivo que, quizás sin buscarlo, trae a la mente "Pamela" de Toto.
La segunda mitad del álbum despega con "Cosmic Tide", un tema que sobresale con su intro de batería y unos efectos de sonido cómicos. La canción que da título al disco, "Give Us the Moon", es otra pieza fuerte con una pegadiza intro de teclado y una distintiva vibra "a lo Toto". Quizás "A Paris Point of View" sea el momento más flojo del álbum, pero aun así ofrece un sonido único, con inspiración disco.
Los tres últimos temas son los más complejos. "Runaways" abre con una conversación dentro de un taxi, marcando un tono diferente pero sin dejar de lado la influencia ochentera en los patrones de batería y las melodías de teclado. "Way to Spend the Night" canaliza el espíritu de Blondie con su coro pegadizo y su intro rítmica. El álbum cierra con "Stewardess, Empress, Hot Mess (And the Captain of Pain)", la canción más larga y compleja, que incorpora elementos de todo lo escuchado anteriormente.

Born from the shared passion of a group of musicians primarily dedicated to heavy metal, The Night Flight Orchestra embarked on a mission to create a classic rock band. And boy, did they deliver! With Björn Strid (Soilwork) on vocals, Sharlee D'Angelo (Arch Enemy) on bass, and Jonas Källsbäck on drums as founding members, the band has achieved immense success with their six studio albums. Their seventh, Give Us the Moon, is arguably their best yet, further cementing their status as the premier classic rock band of this century.
The album opens with an airport-themed introduction, featuring a voice announcing the final boarding call for all band members before launching into the first track, "Stratus" Immediately, you're greeted with a classic '80s-style intro, followed by Björn's powerful vocals and a catchy chorus—a formula repeated throughout the album. "Shooting Velvet" continues the classic rock vibe with a keyboard and drum intro reminiscent of ELO. "Like the Beating of a Heart" offers a slower, more keyboard-driven intro with '80s synthesizer sounds, leading into another catchy chorus.
"Melbourne, May I?" is a personal favorite, showcasing the band's harder rock side with a classic riff that evokes the spirit of '80s Toto. "Miraculous" continues the trend of catchy classic rock songs, while "Paloma" offers a slower, more emotive track that, perhaps unintentionally, recalls Toto's "Pamela"
The second half of the album kicks off with "Cosmic Tide", a standout track featuring a drum intro and cosmic sound effects. The title track, "Give Us the Moon", is another strong offering with a catchy keyboard intro and a distinct Toto vibe. "A Paris Point of View" is the album's weakest moment, but it still offers a unique, disco-inspired sound.
The final three tracks are the most complex. "Runaways" opens with a conversation in a taxi, setting a different tone but still maintaining the '80s influence in the drum patterns and keyboard melodies. "Way to Spend the Night" channels the spirit of Blondie with its catchy chorus and rhythmic intro. The album concludes with "Stewardess, Empress, Hot Mess (And the Captain of Pain)", the longest and most complex track, incorporating elements from throughout the album.
In conclusion, Give Us the Moon is one of the best albums of 2025. While it draws heavily on classic rock influences and offers little innovation, it's a fantastic listen. The Night Flight Orchestra has delivered another stellar album, and I eagerly await their future work.
