Grave Digger es una de esas bandas legendarias que no necesitan presentación. Son uno de los “big 4” del Power Metal alemán y un nombre importante en la industria. No los escucho mucho desde el clásico Excalibur de 1999, pero si hay una banda que ha lanzado álbumes de manera constante, esa es Grave Digger. Con más de 22 albums de estudio hasta la fecha, siguen siendo uno de los grupos de heavy metal más activos surgidos en los años 80.
Con Bone Collector, Grave Digger continúa su tendencia de publicar casi un álbum por año desde 1993. Este disco se centra principalmente en el “señor de la muerte” y marca el 45 aniversario de la banda. Presentando mucho heavy metal alemán clásico—muy tradicional en su estilo—pero lamentablemente no logra mi atención por su falta de diversidad y calidad.
El álbum comienza con la canción homónima “Bone Collector,” la única que realmente captó mi interés gracias a su intrigante introducción, seguida de los clásicos dobles bombos al estilo Grave Digger de los 90. No es especialmente innovadora, pero es un excelente comienzo. “The Rich, The Poor, The Dying” continúa con riffs de puro heavy metal, un coro muy pegadizo y baterías de doble bombo. En este punto, empecé a notar problemas de producción con la voz de Chris: a mi parecer, las guitarras están demasiado altas en comparación con la voz. Luego llega “Kingdom of Skulls,” otra canción con patrones de batería similares y un coro pegadizo a cargo del Skeleton King.

Grave Digger is one of those legendary bands that needs no introduction. They’re one of the “Big 4” of German Power Metal and a major name in the industry. I haven’t listened to them much since the classic Excalibur from 1999, but if there’s a band that has consistently been releasing albums, it’s Grave Digger. With over 22 studio albums to date, they remain one of the most active heavy metal acts from the ’80s.
With Bone Collector, Grave Digger continues their trend of releasing almost one album per year since 1993. This record primarily centers on the lord of death and serves as the band’s 45th-anniversary album. It features plenty of classic German heavy metal—traditional in style—but unfortunately fails to engage me with its diversity and quality.
The album starts with the title track “Bone Collector,” the only song that truly caught my attention thanks to its intriguing intro followed by classic ’90s Grave Digger double bass. It’s nothing particularly innovative, but it’s an excellent opener. “The Rich, The Poor, The Dying” maintains the heavy metal riffs, catchy chorus, and driving double bass drums. At this point, I began noticing production issues with Chris’s vocals—specifically, the guitars seem mixed too high compared to his voice. Next is “Kingdom of Skulls,” another track with similar drum patterns and a catchy chorus by the Skeleton King.
“The Devil’s Serenade” offers a slight respite from the previous drum patterns, introducing a change of pace, though the production issues persist, leaving the track feeling muted and poorly mixed. “Killing Is My Pleasure” returns to the double bass patterns, channeling the spirit of classic German bands like Blind Guardian and Helloween.
“Mirror of Hate” is likely the first track to feature clean guitars, creating a more mysterious vibe, almost like a horror story from the dead. Unfortunately, it quickly goes back to the same double bass pattern. That approach continues with “Riders of Doom,” “Made of Madness,” and “Graveyard Kings,” though “Made of Madness” stands out slightly thanks to its more noticeable bass sections.
The final tracks—“Forever Evil & Buried Alive” and “Whispers of the Damned”—had me waiting for the album to wrap up. From start to finish, the album feels nearly identical, with limited innovation or particularly engaging moments.
I understand why Grave Digger remains a big name in the industry and why they’re considered one of Germany’s most iconic heavy metal bands. However, Bone Collector feels like just another attempt to showcase, for the umpteenth time, the style and formula that made them famous in the ’80s and ’90s. It’s not a bad album overall, but it’s not great either, burdened by production flaws and a lack of creative spark.
